
Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of a Physician and the direction of the Executive Director, the Nurse Practitioner delivers comprehensive primary health care services at the Student Health Center (SHC). These services include assessment, diagnosis, preventive care, and health maintenance. Working under a physician’s supervision and following established standardized procedures and/or process protocols, the Nurse Practitioner collaborates with the SHC Executive Director and supervising Physician(s) to develop and refine these procedures and define the position’s scope of practice. Responsibilities include performing physical examinations; diagnosing, treating, and managing illnesses and injuries; ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests; and counseling patients on preventive health. The Nurse Practitioner also leads infection prevention and control initiatives for the Palm Desert Campus SHC and participates in health promotion activities on campus. This role is primarily based at the Palm Desert campus, with occasional work at the San Bernardino campus.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducts comprehensive physical exams and obtains detailed medical histories using appropriate clinical techniques and diagnostic tools.
- Diagnoses and treats common acute and chronic conditions, develops treatment plans, and provides preventive counseling.
- Provides reproductive health care services, including STI testing/treatment, contraception, pregnancy care, and medication abortion.
- Interprets medical histories, exams, and test results; follows up on abnormal findings through intervention, counseling, or referral.
- Assesses psychosocial issues, offers counseling within scope, and makes referrals as needed.
- Administers first aid, urgent care, and emergency coordination.
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests; performs CLIA-waived testing.
- Documents treatment plans, prognoses, and referrals; maintains complete records for continuity of care.
- Prescribes medications and counsels patients on conditions, treatments, and preventive health.
- Performs minor procedures (injections, immunizations, biopsies, suturing, wound care, orthopedic procedures, incision/drainage).
- Responds to life-threatening situations per protocol.
- Collaborates with physicians and other health professionals on complex cases.
- Ensures compliance with university policies, quality assurance standards, and infection prevention/control protocols.
- Stays current with medical and nurse practitioner best practices.
- Leads infection prevention and control for Palm Desert Campus SHC in collaboration with the SHC Clinic Coordinator.
- May provide lead direction to SHC support staff, including scheduling, assigning/reviewing work, training, and contributing to hiring and performance evaluations.
- Participates in departmental meetings, completes required trainings, engages in professional development, and performs other duties to support SHC operations.
- Leads the SHC immunization clinics for PDC.
- Assists with SHC Health Promotion efforts at PDC; provides workshops/presentations on a variety of health topics.
- Participates in PDC SHC and campus wellness activities.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
- Education and Experience: Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.
Required Qualifications
- Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, medical theories, practices, protocols, applicable laws/regulations, and—if assigned—supervisory practices.
- Clinical competence in patient history-taking, examinations, diagnosis, treatment of acute/chronic conditions, use of diagnostic tools, interpretation of test results, and appropriate referrals.
- Ability to work independently within scope of practice, maintain current medical knowledge, and provide lead direction to support staff when assigned.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse patients and colleagues.
- Commitment to preventive care, holistic patient care, and integrated clinic operations.
- Dedication to delivering the highest standard of care to a diverse campus community.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current/Valid Nurse Practitioner Furnishing License
- Current/Valid DEA License
- Current Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts.
- Commitment to preventative care, a holistic patient care model, and working in a fully integrated clinic.
- Excellent communication skills.

- Master’s degree or Advanced degree.
- Two or more years’ experience in primary care.
- Experience with women’s health, including knowledge about family planning methods.
- Experience in college health or experience working with college-age patients.
- Intrauterine Device (IUD) insertion experience.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Special Conditions:
Licenses & Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid California Registered Nurse license, a California BRN Nurse Practitioner certificate, and—if authorized to furnish medications—a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate. If furnishing controlled substances, must also hold a valid DEA registration and certificate.
Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,712 - $10,500 per month
Classification Salary Range: $6,712 - $12,952 per month
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.
Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The scope of responsibilities for this position includes making or participating in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the individual holding this position is required to file an initial Conflict of Interest: Statement of Economic Interests ("Form 700") within thirty (30 days) from the date of hire and on an annual basis. In addition, the individual holding this position must complete the required conflict of interest training within thirty (30) days of their appointment and at least once during each consecutive period of two calendar years following the appointment, subject to the Fair Political Practices Commission regulations.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Campus Security Authority
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.
