Department Summary

The Office of Community Engagement facilitates service learning, community-based research and volunteer service by engaging students, faculty and community partners in collaborative partnerships that serve the public good. We lead the university-wide culture of community engagement as a high impact practice that contributes to student success.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the OCE Director, the incumbent will develop and implement small- and large-scale, complex community-based learning projects with broad, visible impact that involve coordination with students, faculty, campus departments and local/regional/international community partners. The incumbent will coordinate high profile and selective community engagement programs, including promotion, student recruitment and implementation.  The incumbent will identify and develop community partners and serve as liaison for the office at campus and community meetings. The incumbent will also develop partnerships with other campuses, professional associations and community partners to enhance OCE’s visibility and to bring new resources and professional development opportunities for the campus and our community partners.  The incumbent will design and implement program assessment and continuous improvement plans, and will assist with the writing of reports, press releases, newsletters and other publicity and conduct both formal and informal presentations for on and off campus groups. The incumbent will supervise student assistants to provide event support, and will identify and assist with grant applications and other fund development opportunities to support community engagement work.  The incumbent will perform other related duties as assigned.

Employment Status: Full-time, probationary "exempt" position

Work Schedule

  • Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required.

Key Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge and experience with community-based learning, including cultivating and sustaining respectful and mutually beneficial community-university partnerships, training others to engage with community members, program and event management, and facilitating reflection is required.
• Applicants must demonstrate effectiveness in and knowledge of the nonprofit sector in the Inland Empire or related urban setting.
• Applicants must have highly effective interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to tailor language and presentations to connect with different audiences.
• Applicants must have excellent customer service skills for working with varied stakeholder groups, including working across university divisions and community divides. Applicants must have proven leadership skills, including student staff supervision, time and resource management, group facilitation, and tolerance for ambiguity, conflict mediation, thoughtful budgeting and the ability to manage detailed work.
• Applicants must be able to make decisions based on reasoned judgement and embrace and navigate change. Applicants must possess a thorough knowledge of office procedures and practices as well as skills in technical and persuasive writing, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
• Applicants must possess a willingness to work an adjusted schedule for project related activities, along with the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
• Applicants must have a working knowledge of standard office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, email and social media programs, along with the ability to work cooperatively with a diverse group of people, work autonomously and exercise sound judgment, determine priorities, complete assigned projects in a timely manner and work effectively under tight deadlines.

-Applicants must be able to work with minimal supervision.

Education and Experience

  • Applicants must possess a Bachelor's degree and/or the equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs along with three years of progressively responsible related experience.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • General knowledge of evaluation principles and techniques and skill in their application; general knowledge of organization and management; and general knowledge of higher education policies, nonprofit organizations, service learning pedagogy, and fund development is preferred.
  • Three years of advanced experience (start to finish an academic year at least three times) in evaluation, management and higher education policies.


Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,927 - $5,415 per month

Classification Salary Range: $4,693 - $8,489 per month
