Department Summary

Under immediate supervision, and in accordance with schedules or periodic instructions, the Groundsworker performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds in an assigned area of a campus.

Job Summary

Groundsworkers typically perform work involving some or all of the following duties: plant, cultivate, fertilize, water and spray ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns, and flowers; rake leaves; hoe weeds; clean trash from assigned areas including parking lots; prepare and treat soils for planting; maintain hoses, sprinklers, tools, supplies and equipment in proper condition and repair; trim trees. Hedges, and shrubs and erect tree supports; may operate and perform minor maintenance on small power-operated pavement sweepers, power mowers, small riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment; may assist in the preparing and lining of athletic fields for events; may occasionally assist a qualified specialist in sprinkler repair, spraying, tree trimming, or nursery functions; may drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties; and may provide lead work direction to students and unskilled assistants.

Employment Status: Full-time, probationary "non-exempt" position

First Review Deadline: This position will remain open until filled. The initial review of applications will begin on April 5, 2021.

*Completion of a pre-employment physical examination with acceptable results is required of the successful candidate.

Work Schedule

  • Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm with the possibility of converting to an alternative work schedule.

Key Qualifications 

  • Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Abilities: Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees, and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow simple oral and written instructions. 

Education and Experience 

  • Experience: One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.
  • License: Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver’s license.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift, lower, push, and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-60 pounds; must be able to carry loads ranging from 20-50 pounds for distances up to 20 feet; must be capable of kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders, walking, twisting, stooping, and bending; depending upon the project, employee may spend 20-50% of day sitting, 20-50% of day standing, 20-50% of day walking. 

Salary:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $2,956 - $3,450 monthly

Classification Salary Range: $2,945 - $4,950 monthly
