Department Summary

The mission of Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising (ASUA) is to support holistic academic services through various departmental programs and resources that promote equity, retention, timely graduation, and student-defined success for all undergraduate students.

ASUA supports developing, improving, and maintaining undergraduate programs and related policies. It provides leadership and input, as appropriate, for changing, enhancing, or improving existing programs and policies. Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising also provides leadership in developing academic support programs.

ASUA is also responsible for ensuring that the laws, regulations, and campus policies that apply to undergraduate education are implemented relatively and are consistent with their intent.

 

Job Summary

The Academic Advisor will advise students throughout their time at CSUSB, making sure students are aware of courses needed to graduate, resources available to them and knowledge of policies and procedures. The Academic Advisor will support CSUSB, PDC and Advising initiatives. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Advise all PDC Students, including PDC majors and non-majors.
  • Present workshops, table around campus, meet students where they are to promote advising, encourage students to meet with an advisor.
  • Work with campus partners to create a sense of belonging for students at PDC and CSUSB.
  • Other Duties as Assigned (review credit summaries, review student records, other projects)

 

Employment Status: Part-time (up to 35 hours), Temporary, "Non-Exempt" position (with the possibility of converting to permanent).

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

Key Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of methods and problems of organization and program management.
  • Working knowledge of research and interviewing techniques.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Working knowledge of the basic principles, practices and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program an its relationship to the total campus operation.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies.

 

Education and Experience

  • Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job‑related education may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job‑related field. (Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess working knowledge of university academic requirements, including general education, major requirements and other requirements.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned projects and with other members of the advising team, building collaboration, and partnerships.
  • Responsible, Great Communicator, Critical Thinking, Organized.

Salary

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,796 per month based on Full-time hours

Classification Salary Range: $3,796 - $5,369 per month

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.
