Job Summary:

Under general supervision, the Police Officer is assigned to patrol the campus on foot and/or by vehicle, protect lives and property, write clear and concise reports, and enforce penal and Vehicle Code violations. The incumbent will apprehend and arrest violators, appear in court when necessary, provide security for large gatherings, assemblies, or other campus activities, and may conduct investigations related to assigned cases. The incumbent may also be required to perform additional duties that enhance the safety and security of the campus community. CSUSB places significant importance on community partnerships and community-oriented problem solving.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • To enforce laws and traffic regulations, protect lives and property, enforce campus policies, patrol campus buildings, apprehend violators, provide general information and assistance to the public, write clear and concise reports, and provide security for large gatherings, assemblies, or other campus activities.
  • Conduct investigations related to assigned cases.
  • Conduct themselves in a manner that promotes good public relations, supporting and enhancing the goals of the Department.
  • Courteous in both internal and external interactions, conduct themselves in a manner that supports teamwork, monitor their Mobile Digital Computer (MDC) and radio, acknowledge transmissions when called, keep their status updated, and handle calls appropriately and efficiently in accordance with Department policies, guidelines, and applicable laws.
  • Organize their time and focus on assigned priorities, as well as patrol the University and assist other agencies.
  • Prepare clear, factual, concise, and complete reports and written work in accordance with Department guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Will participate in ongoing training to enhance law enforcement skills, including firearm proficiency, defensive driving, apprehension and arrest techniques, investigative skills, active shooter drills, and general law enforcement practices.
  • Conduct investigations at assigned or observed incident scenes, determine if a crime has been committed, identify, collect, preserve, process, and book evidence, locate and interview victims and witnesses, and identify and interrogate suspects.
  • Perform their duties in alignment with the community policing philosophy, engaging with the community they serve and addressing issues within their patrol jurisdiction.
  • Exchange information with Department personnel on crime prevention efforts and follow-up investigations, review Department activity at the University upon returning from days off or other leave, and maintain open communication within the Department and with surrounding agencies regarding problem-solving efforts, community concerns, and enforcement action.
  • Actively participate in shift briefings and station meetings, providing updates and status reports on significant incidents.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to the campus community and other entities.
  • Conduct daily foot patrols, engage in community outreach, and strengthen University Police Department's (UPD) relationships with campus community members, including students, staff, and faculty.
  • Foster a guardian mindset during community interactions and to embrace the Department's 21st Century Policing Philosophy, the Police Chief's Philosophy, the Department's mission and vision statements, and the University's mission statement.
  • Other classification-related duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor, the Lieutenant, and/or the Police Chief

Minimum .Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified training program.
  • Peace Officers in this classification must be or have:
  • Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
  • Possess a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing.
  • Valid California driver’s license

Required Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to resolve a wide variety of sensitive situations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Ability to assess law enforcement or other hazardous situations and determine an appropriate course of action, along with the ability to maintain a cooperative working relationship with the general campus community.

License/Certifications:

  • Peace Officers in this classification must be or have:
  • Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
  • Possess a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing.
  • Valid California driver’s license.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $ $7,705 per month

Working Schedule: 3/12 with 8hr shift every other week

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

Position Information:

Full-time, Non-Exempt, Probationary

This position classification has been defined as non-exempt and is subjected to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Physical Exam

Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
