Typical Activities

Under minimal supervision of the Associate Provost for Academic Research, the Project Technologist will work independently to:

  • Analyze end-to-end sponsored research administration processes in the Office of Academic Research - including intake, routing, review, pre-award preparation, and post-award monitoringand translate those business rules into automated, technology-enabled solutions that reduce manual work for staff and leadership.
  • The role will develop, enhance, and maintain enterprise-style Power BI dashboards that provide real-time visibility into proposal pipelines, awarded projects, IDC/recovery, college and PI participation, and other KPIs needed by the Chief Research Officer for decision support.
  • In addition to BI, the position will design and deploy AI- and agent-based applications (including chatbots) that help faculty and OAR staff locate funding opportunities, interpret OAR policies and campus procedures, generate standard communications, and surface the right forms and guidance at the right time, thereby improving turnaround and consistency.
  • The incumbent will integrate data from existing university platforms and OAR sources (such as InfoReady-like systems, spreadsheets, Qualtrics, or research-tracking files) to create a single, governed analytical layer with defined refresh schedules, role-based access, and documentation.
  • The position will also produce executive-facing reporting for the Chief Research Officer, converting complex technical outputs into usable visualizations and narratives, while training OAR staff to adopt these tools and providing ongoing iteration based on user feedback.
  • Because these solutions are mission-critical to OAR’s research operations, all work must follow campus security, data privacy, and sustainability standards so that solutions are maintainable within OAR after deployment and require the advanced technical expertise of the incumbent.
