University Enterprises Corporation at CSUSB ("UEC") supports the university's educational mission by providing quality services that complement the instructional program. The University depends upon UEC to provide services that cannot be supported with state funds. We’re responsible for business enterprises on campus including, but not limited to, dining, bookstore, convenience store, and vending services. We also serve as the grantee for federal, state, and local funding for research and sponsored projects.

Position Summary

Temporary, Staff, Part Time, Non-Benefitted position through 6/30/2026 (Appointment may be renewed annually based upon availability of funds, availability of work and satisfactory job performance). 

Salary: $28.00-$38.00 per hour.

Location: CSUSB Campus

Work Schedule

Up to 19 hours per week. Generally, 2:00PM to 6:00PM Monday through Thursday. Some night and weekend work may be required.

Typical Activities

Under minimal supervision of the Director of WALC, the Literacy Specialist will work independently to:

Assessment & Diagnosis

  • Evaluate students’ reading and writing abilities using formal and informal assessments.
  • Identify struggling learners, determine specific skill gaps, and make recommendations for targeted intervention.

Direct Literacy Instruction

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group instruction focused on phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing development.
  • Use evidence-based, structured literacy practices tailored to each learner’s needs.

Intervention Planning & Implementation

  • Design individualized intervention plans for students requiring additional support.
  • Implement targeted strategies, adjust instruction based on student response, and ensure interventions align with best practices.

Teacher Support & Collaboration

  • Partner with classroom teachers to integrate literacy strategies into core instruction.
  • Assist with lesson planning, model effective practices, and provide ongoing coaching aligned to school or district goals.

Professional Development Leadership

  • Develop and facilitate workshops, training sessions, and professional learning communities (PLCs) for the literacy center tutors.
  • Support tutors and staff in understanding current literacy research, instructional methods, and assessment practices.

Progress Monitoring & Reporting

  • Track and document student progress through ongoing data collection.
  • Communicate results clearly to  families, providing recommendations for next steps.

Curriculum & Materials Guidance

  • Support the selection, development, and evaluation of literacy curricula and instructional materials.
  • Ensure materials align to research-based practices and meet the needs of diverse learners, including English Learners and LTELs.

Family Communication & Support

  • Meet with parents or guardians to share student progress, explain instructional approaches, and offer resources for home literacy development.
  • Build strong partnerships with families to support continuous learning.

Tutoring Center Essential Functions

  • Oversee the tutors:  scheduling, training, communication, training
  • Communicate with the district partners in the working of the WALC.
  • Provide guidance in the development of special events for the tutoring center clients.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in education, literacy, child development, or a related field required.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of one year of experience in literacy instruction, tutoring, or educational support services.
  • Other:
    • • Knowledge of evidence-based literacy instruction, intervention strategies, and tutoring methodologies.
      • Familiarity with assessment tools used to evaluate literacy development in children and adolescents.
      • Ability to train, mentor, and support university student tutors in instructional best practices.
      • Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to manage schedules and maintain accurate records.
      • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, tutors, faculty, and community stakeholders.
      • Proficiency in using digital tools for lesson planning, communication, scheduling, and data tracking.
      • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
      • Commitment to fostering a supportive, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with college students or pre-service teachers in a training or mentoring capacity is highly desirable.
  • Experience with lesson planning, assessment, and instructional strategies for diverse learners preferred.
  • Master’s degree in literacy education, curriculum and instruction, or a related field preferred.
