POSITION PURPOSE: The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Coordinator serves as a lead for the area and plays a pivotal role in providing holistic, student-centered support services to first-generation, low-income, and educationally disadvantaged students. Under the general direction of the Director of EOP, the Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing key student success initiatives, including retention programming and transition support. The position requires the ability to work independently on complex assignments, use sound judgment in problem-solving, and provide guidance to students and staff. The Coordinator supports student academic achievement, personal development, and retention through proactive mentoring and coaching and collaboration with campus partners. The position also plays a vital role in the evaluation of services and helps ensure the alignment of EOP’s mission with CSU and institutional goals.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Coordination & Student Success Initiatives
- Independent plan, coordinate and implement transition and retention programs such as First-Year Experience, and peer mentoring.
- Lead, develop, and coordinate EOP-related programming and events that are responsive to evolving student needs and institutional goals throughout the academic year.
- Plan and oversee workshops, seminars, and orientations for new and continuing EOP students, utilizing data-informed approaches.
- Provide daily lead direction and support to program personnel, student staff, peer mentors, and interns involved in EOP programming, ensuring quality and consistency in service delivery. Assign and monitor daily tasks, serve as a resource for guidance and training, and collaborate with the Director on staffing needs, scheduling, and input on performance evaluations as needed.
- Track and assess participation and outcomes for all student success initiatives and recommend program enhancements based on findings.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff across departments to develop and implement co-curricular programming aligned with student needs.
- Maintain program calendars, timelines, and event logistics in coordination with other campus units.
- Support strategic program marketing efforts and communication for EOP programs through print, email, and social media.
Assessment & Reporting
- Collect, analyze, and interpret student data to assess program effectiveness and inform continuous development and improvement.
- Assist in preparing departmental reports, annual program reviews, and grant proposals as needed that support the strategic direction of EOP.
- Maintain accurate and organized records of student interactions, program participation, and academic outcomes for compliance and planning.
- Coordinate with Institutional Research and other offices to compile data and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Support compliance with CSU and university policies regarding EOP services and student eligibility through regular review and evaluation of procedures.
- Assist the Director in developing and implementing strategic goals and policies for EOP.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development opportunities, and campus committees as assigned.
- Serve as a resource to other university departments on issues related to educational equity and student success.
Academic Coaching & Mentoring
- Provide advanced individualized academic coaching using evidence-based techniques to help EOP students build self-efficacy, set goals, and develop academic and life skills for college success.
- Mentor students through transitional challenges, such as adjusting to college-level coursework and navigating the first-generation college experience.
- Guide students in creating and maintaining personalized academic success plans that promote retention and timely graduation.
- Use a strengths-based, culturally responsive approach to empower students to take ownership of their educational journey.
- Conduct regular check-ins with students to assess progress, provide accountability, and identify early signs of academic or personal challenges.
- Design and facilitate workshops on academic strategies, personal development, time management, and motivation.
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources such as tutoring, counseling, or financial aid based on individual needs and challenges. Follow up to ensure effective support.
- Document coaching sessions, mentoring relationships, and student development progress using university systems and databases.
Outreach, Recruitment, & Admissions Support
- Represent EOP at campus outreach events, high school visits, and college fairs to promote access and equity in higher education.
- Provide information about EOP eligibility, application procedures, and services to prospective students and families.
- Assist with the coordination and review of EOP admissions, including application screening and interviews.
- Collaborate with Admissions, Financial Aid, and other campus departments to ensure a smooth onboarding process.
- Participate in yield activities to support the enrollment of admitted EOP students.
- Maintain proactive communication with applicants during the pre-admissions process.
- Develop and distribute informational materials and presentations tailored for prospective students and counselors.
- Monitor and assess outreach activities and adjust strategies based on recruitment goals and data.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional student services work. A master’s degree in counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

- General knowledge of organizational procedures and activities of the campus and working knowledge of student services programs outside the program.
- Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student related matters.
- Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.
- Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
- Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
- Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.

- Experience working in a higher educational setting; knowledge of general admission requirements and transcript evaluation; making independent judgements and interpreting complex situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: SEDENTARY WORK – involves mainly sitting; minimal walking and standing; lifting light weight objects limited to 15 pounds.
