Position Summary
The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Workforce Partnerships coordinates San Francisco State University’s strategic initiatives to connect students with high-quality career, internship, and professional experiences that promote upward economic mobility and strengthen the Bay Area’s workforce. Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the AVP will establish robust SFSU-specific hiring and internship pipelines with regional employers and coordinate the University’s career-connected education model across divisions.
This position will distinguish SFSU as a career-ready institution recognized nationally for its role as an engine of upward mobility and workforce innovation. The AVP will establish and expand industry partnerships, aligning employer engagement with SFSU’s academic strengths and community impact. As this position is crucial in ensuring our students secure meaningful, economically-mobilizing careers through improved access to career pathways, targeted professional development, and expansive networking opportunities, it will work closely with our office of Career and Leadership Development (CLD) and related programs across the university that include a focus on career development.
Through collaboration with internal and external partners, the AVP will assert SFSU’s leadership as an anchor institution in the San Francisco and Bay Area region, representing the University in forums such as the Bay Area Council, the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. The AVP will also ensure SFSU’s career-readiness story is embedded throughout the University’s communications, in collaboration with the Senior AVP for Enrollment Management and the AVP for Strategic Marketing and Communications.
Position Information
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Develop and implement a comprehensive workforce partnerships strategy that builds structured, sustainable pipelines between SFSU and Bay Area employers across corporate, nonprofit, civic, and entrepreneurial sectors.
- Expand industry partnerships and coordinate employer engagement strategies across academic and administrative divisions.
- Distinguish SFSU as a career-ready institution recognized regionally and nationally for connecting education to employment and advancing upward mobility.
- Serve as the campus’s primary executive responsible for developing long-term, high-impact employer relationships that expand hiring and internship opportunities for SFSU students.
- Represent SFSU as an anchor institution in key regional and civic forums, including the Bay Area Council, San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, and related workforce and economic development entities.
Employer Partnerships & Program Development
- Forge long-term partnerships with leading organizations in key regional and national industries.
- Negotiate formal agreements for paid and credit-bearing internships and externships, ensuring equitable access and inclusion for all students.
- Launch and manage initiatives to provide stipends for unpaid roles in mission-aligned organizations.
- Further scale existing programs of recruitment events, industry-specific networking nights, and employer showcases.
- In close collaboration with SFSU’s Alumni Relations Office, leverage alumni and community networks by establishing programs such as an “Alumni Employer Fellows” initiative to formalize alumni participation in mentorship and talent recruitment.
Campus & External Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with the Career & Leadership Development (CLD) Office, the Lam Family College of Business Career Services, the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement (ICCE), the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Dean of Graduate Studies and Career Development, the Vice Provost of Academic Planning, and the Dean of Undergraduate Education to help ensure coordinated, effective workforce readiness efforts across the University.
- Partner with the Senior AVP for Enrollment Management and the AVP for Strategic Marketing and Communications to ensure that SFSU’s career-readiness identity is highlighted in all prospective student materials and marketing campaigns.
- Collaborate with the Dean of Undergraduate Education and Dean of Graduate Studies and Career Development to help integrate experiential learning, micro-certificates, and industry-linked projects into the curriculum.
- Build partnerships with regional workforce boards, civic leaders, and employers to position SFSU as a key player in economic and workforce development initiatives.
- In collaboration with Government Relations, support the university’s engagement with regional governmental entities, such as the City of San Francisco Office of Workforce and Economic Development.
Data, Impact, & Accountability
- Develop and implement evaluation frameworks to measure student participation, employer engagement, job placement rates, and wage outcomes.
- Compile an annual SFSU Workforce Impact Report showcasing data-driven outcomes and highlighting SFSU’s contributions to upward economic mobility.
- Maintain a partnership management system (CRM) to track relationships, outcomes, and opportunities for continuous improvement.
Leadership & Administration
- Serve as a key advisor to the Vice President for University Advancement and participate as a member of the University Advancement leadership team.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and inclusive excellence within the workforce partnerships portfolio.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in workforce development, employer relations, career services, economic development, or related fields.
- Demonstrated success in establishing and sustaining partnerships with employers, community organizations, and government agencies.
- Strong understanding of regional labor market dynamics and strategies that advance inclusive economic mobility.
- Proven ability to lead cross-divisional initiatives in a large, diverse organization.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in business administration, education, public policy, or a related field.
- Experience developing internship, cooperative education, or employer engagement programs within higher education.
- Record of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through workforce and career-readiness initiatives.
- Experience with CRM systems and data-driven reporting.
- Experience representing institutions in civic, business, and workforce forums regionally or nationally.
