Job Summary

The Equipment Technician will work under the general supervision of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department Chairperson and in close coordinator with other MAE Equipment Technicians. The person is responsible for assigned equipment design, fabrication, installation, operation, maintenance, and upgrade of assigned equipment used in MAE course instruction or research activities. The person will also be involved in construction of unique, highly technical and prototype equipment or systems needed for instruction and/or research as assigned by the MAE Department Chairperson.


Key Responsibilities

  • Under the direction Of the Department Chair, this technician will assist with the maintenance of the MAE machine shop. Shop equipment to be maintained includes lathes, milling machines, drill presses, surface grinders, optical comparators, band saws, cutoff saw, disc grinder, gas welders, heliarc welder, arc welder, sheet metal shear, sheet metal brake, abrasive cut-off machine, rapid prototyping machine, robots, 3-D Scanner, and CNC machine.
  • This technician wilt assist the other technicians in the maintenance and repair of all equipment and facilities in all MAE instructional and research laboratories including: aerodynamics lab, acoustics lab, fluid mechanics lab, thermal engineering lab, dynamics and control lab, metallurgy lab, materials and mechanical properties lab, heat and power lab, automotive lab, petroleum engineering lab, strength of materials lab, rapid prototyping lab, manufacturing lab, automation lab, and all wind tunnels.
  • This technician will assist other MAE technicians in providing support for the MAE capstone design courses; Design of MAE Systems; the SAE projects: Mini Baja Offroad Vehicle, Human-Powered Vehicles, SAE Formula One Car, and the rocket projects. and other MAE student projects/competitions. Assist with supervising students involved in machining project designs. Instruct students in proper and safe use of equipment and machinery.
  • Participate in the design and fabrication of specialized laboratory equipment, research and experimental equipment, modification and updating of existing equipment in a capacity requiring the following skills: ability to overhaul automotive engines, transmissions; grind valves or repair other motors and engines; knowledge of arc welding, brazing, soldering, tig welding, mig welding, and all equipment in the MAE machine shop.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

  • CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $4,595 (Step 1) - $6,694 (Step 20) per month.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong proficiency in operating all machine shop equipment and contributes actively to the design and construction of research instruments and classroom experimental apparatus. They provide knowledgeable, hands-on support to faculty and students on a wide range of class projects, offering guidance on proper equipment use while ensuring adherence to all lab safety protocols.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to two years of journey-level experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical mechanical equipment requiring construction and fabrication skills, some precision work, and trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials, or specialized knowledge and skill related to unusual equipment required.

Preferred:

Experience in specialty areas of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Experience in the design modification and fabrication of complex and highly technical equipment.
