Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Police Officer Cadet participates in comprehensive academy-based instruction and applied training in law enforcement principles, tactical skills, and report writing, while gaining practical exposure through field support activities and assisting officers with operational duties in diverse and dynamic public safety environments.

  • Under general supervision, the Cadet attends the prescribed police academy to learn the principles, practices, and theory of criminal and civil law enforcement in addition to codified and case law
  • receives training in report writing
  • physical fitness techniques, firearms use and maintenance, and arrest and control techniques
  • Under close supervision, the Cadet may assist other police officers in the performance of their duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and eligibility to attend a certified California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) basic training academy.
  • Must meet CSUN Minimum Standards of Employment and Training; must be free of any felony convictions; have good moral character; meet pre-employment requirements, including the (POST) Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery, physical agility test, successful completion of a comprehensive (POST) background investigation, physical exam with drug testing, and psychological exam. 
  • Successful completion of (POST) certified training program, including obtaining a Basic Course Certificate required.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Working understanding of criminal and civil law, including codified and case law, with the ability to apply foundational concepts learned through academy training in practical settings.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and concise reports, demonstrating attention to detail and proper documentation standards consistent with law enforcement practices.
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks and apply learned techniques in physical fitness, firearms handling and maintenance, and arrest and control methods in training and field environments.
  • Ability to effectively assist sworn personnel, follow directions in structured environments, and contribute to daily law enforcement operations while maintaining professionalism and situational awareness.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver, and more.
  • Classification: 8346 / Police Officer Cadet/ 0
  • The anticipated HIRING RATE is $6418 per month. The salary range for this classification is: $3934 - $6418 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday and may include evenings and weekends.  
  • This is a Temporary position for the duration of police academy training; end date to be determined based on academy start date.
  • The individual hired for this role will be expected to train at the academy, and on occasion will report on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
