Job Summary: 

Library Information Technology (LIT) Student Assistants develop advanced technology support skills and provide high quality customer service for library users and employees. They staff two makerspaces open to all CSUSB students and maintain hardware, software and equipment assigned to Pfau Library. Student assistants work as a cohesive team under the oversight of the Systems and Discovery Librarian and ITS Technology Consultants assigned to the library.

Student employees are a critical part of Pfau Library. You help us provide welcoming, accessible, and reliable service to the campus community. Our goal is to offer a supportive workplace that enables you to gain experience, knowledge, and skills and unlocks further opportunities for you beyond graduation. As a Student Assistant, you’ll increase your understanding of innovative technologies and have opportunities to teach making through individual consultations and group workshops. You’ll contribute to our culture of continuous learning and exploration, uphold standards for safe and effective equipment use, and promote an inclusive, welcoming ethos.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Take technology requests via phone, email or in person; evaluate the extent of work needed; research and implement solutions; and follow up with requestors to ensure successful resolution.

Maintain and troubleshoot library technology, including:

  • Windows and Macintosh workstations  
  • Printers and scanners
  • A/V editing and podcasting equipment
  • 3D printing, scanning and vinyl cutting equipment
  • Instruct makerspace users in basic operation of equipment and safety protocols; advise users on how to utilize makerspace resources in their projects and contribute to makerspace workshops and tours.
  • Maintain LIT office and makerspace physical spaces, keeping them safe, clean, orderly, and inviting.
  • Contribute to workflows for technology deployment, inventory, and disposal.
  • Gather and report statistics on library technology use and supply levels.
  • Contribute to regular team meetings and ongoing training.
  • Perform other work to assist the LIT department as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience 

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position. 
  • Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student. 
  • As a Bridge Student Assistant, the student need not be registered as a student, but must have been enrolled as a CSU student the previous term and is registered for the following term.

Required Qualifications 

  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative. 
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate) 
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate) 
  • Eligible to work in the United States 
  • Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Commitment to your own learning and supporting the learning of others.
  • Ingenuity in applying technology to solve problems.
  • Ability to locate, follow and create online documentation.
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain complete and accurate records.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude when under pressure.
  • Familiarity with Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
  • Familiarity with analog and digital creative tools/methods, such as 3D printing, sewing, microcontrollers, or video editing.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft networking concepts.
  • Familiarity with computer management systems (Intune, JAMF).

Compensation and Benefits: 

Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.00 per hour. 

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors. 

Position Information: 

Work status: Part-Time, Temporary, Seasonal 

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm). 

Summer available hours: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm). 

This is an 'On-Campus Only' position. Student Employees are not eligible to telecommute at any time. 

As of January 1, 2022, the CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy prohibits the hiring of employees to perform CSU-related work outside the state of California. 

California State University, San Bernardino in not a sponsoring agency for staff or management positions (i.e. H1-B Visas). 

Conditions of Employment  

Background Check  

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) may be required for student employment purposes. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check when required may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position. 

Driver’s License Check  

Possession of a valid Driver's License may be required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
