University Enterprises Corporation at CSUSB ("UEC") supports the university's educational mission by providing quality services that complement the instructional program. The University depends upon UEC to provide services that cannot be supported with state funds. We’re responsible for business enterprises on campus including, but not limited to, dining, bookstore, convenience store, and vending services. We also serve as the grantee for federal, state, and local funding for research and sponsored projects.

Position Summary

Temporary, part time, “non-exempt”, non benefited position through May 31, 2022 (Appointment may be renewed annually based upon availability of funds, availability of work and satisfactory job performance).

Salary: $16.50-$19.50/hour

Department Summary:

The Student Recruitment Specialist position adheres to the Upward Bound Program academic year schedule and must be available from September 1, 2021, through May 31, 2022.  The Student Recruitment Specialist will work collaboratively with the Coordinators and staff involved in the recruitment process in developing and facilitating recruitment strategies and materials. The Student Recruitment Specialist will visit target schools, make presentations, schedule and conduct interviews to recruit participants via distance learning platforms until it is safe to do so in person. The Student Recruitment Specialist's primary focus is to increase the enrollment of target high school students in 9th and 10th grade in the Upward Bound Program.

Work Schedule

20 hours per week. Schedule to be arranged, but typically, Monday-Friday between 8:00 am - 5:00 pm though some nights, weekend work may be required.

Typical Activities

Under minimal supervision of the Director, the Recruitment Specialist will work independently to:

  • Participates in the development of student recruitment and retention plans, strategies, and recruitment /marketing /outreach materials.
  • Represents the Upward Bound Program in outreach and recruitment efforts.
  • Visits middle schools, target high schools, speaks to groups and individual students and promotes outreach activities.
  • Manages and monitors database (Formsite) of prospective /or potential new participants.
  • Communicates with prospective participants and parents.
  • Schedules and conducts new student interviews.
  • Supports program staff in scheduling and conducting new student orientation in groups or individually.
  • Develops and completes initial participant file.
  • Maintains confidentiality and safeguards student/program records.
  • Supports staff in streamlining the transition of new students into the program.
  • Reviews and enters prospective student and/or newly recruited student's data into program database(s).
  • Works with program staff in maintaining accurate records and program database on information related to recruitment of new students.
  • Attend appropriate TRIO conferences and/or professional development trainings as required.
  • Develop, plan, coordinate and implement other program related projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education:  Applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree or be enrolled at an accredited higher education institution.
  • Experience: Must have a minimum of two (2) years of professional experience.
  • Other:  The candidate is required to have knowledge of the postsecondary admissions and financial aid processes and criteria, including but not limited to A-G requirements, college entrance exams, admissions criteria, FAFSA, scholarships, housing, and other resources for college success.  Applicants must have experience recruiting students, records management/training, preparing/facilitating workshops/seminars, coordinating and implementing student services, working with parents, and liaison with target schools.  Applicants must have strong organizational, management, leadership, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.  Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.  Applicants must possess the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information, along with the ability to work cooperatively with a diverse group of people, exercise sound judgment, determine priorities, complete assigned projects in a timely manner, and work well under tight deadlines.  A valid California Driver’s License is required. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in distance learning platforms such as Zoom and Google Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong preference will be given to candidates that have received TRIO-specific training, such as the trainings sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.

Strong preference will be given to candidates who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project's target population and or have experience working in similar educational equity programs.
