Job Summary:

Under the immediate supervision of Avisinia Rodriguez, Executive Director of Student Completion Engagement, and Christopher Olguin, Transfer Programs & Orientation Coordinator, in collaboration with Joanna Banda, Student Engagement Office Coordinator. The Orientation Leader team at California State University, San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus (PDC) plays a vital role in welcoming and guiding new students through their transition to campus life.

Key Responsibilities:
Peer Educator & Role Model: As an Orientation Leader, you will serve as a peer educator and role model, setting a positive example for incoming students.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Welcome and Engage New Students:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for incoming freshmen and transfer students, ensuring a warm and professional welcome to campus.
    • Assist students in acclimating to the university environment and foster a positive first impression of CSUSB PDC.
  • Lead Campus Tours:
    • Conduct guided campus tours, providing essential information about campus facilities, academic resources, and student services.
    • Address questions from students and their families, ensuring clarity and promoting a positive campus experience.
  • Facilitate Orientation Activities:
    • Support the execution of orientation programs, including group activities, icebreakers, and informational sessions.
    • Encourage student participation and engagement in various orientation activities, helping them connect with their peers and the campus community.
  • Act as a Peer Mentor and Role Model:
    • Serve as a mentor, offering insights into student life and academic success at CSUSB PDC.
    • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and a positive attitude at all times, setting a strong example for new students.
  • Provide Information on Campus Resources:
    • Educate new students on the available campus resources, including academic support, student services, extracurricular activities, and wellness programs.
    • Assist students in navigating the campus and understanding the full range of services available to support their success.
  • Work in Extreme Weather Conditions:
    • Perform duties outdoors in high heat conditions, including leading campus tours and assisting with outdoor events.
    • Adhere to heat safety protocols, including staying hydrated, wearing appropriate sun protection, and taking scheduled breaks as necessary.
  • Collaborate with Orientation Team:
    • Work closely with other Orientation Leaders and staff members to ensure the smooth execution of orientation events.
    • Attend and actively participate in all mandatory training sessions and team meetings.
  • Assist with Event Setup and Breakdown:
    • Support the setup and breakdown of orientation events, including arranging materials, signage, and equipment.
    • Ensure all logistics are handled efficiently and promptly to ensure a seamless experience for new students.
  • Provide Ongoing Support to New Students:
    • Offer guidance and support to students as they transition to university life, helping them navigate academic, social, and extracurricular opportunities.
    • Address student inquiries and provide appropriate direction or referrals to campus services when necessary.
  • Maintain Communication with Supervisors:
    • Regularly report to the Orientation Committee and other supervisors on the status of orientation activities and any student concerns.
    • Communicate effectively to ensure coordination and timely resolution of any issues that arise.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.
  • As a Bridge Student Assistant, the student need not be registered as a student, but must have been enrolled as a CSU student the previous term and is registered for the following term.

Required Qualifications

  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)

Special Conditions

  • Orientation Leaders at CSUSB Palm Desert Campus (PDC) will be working outdoors in extreme heat conditions during the summer and fall months. The role requires the ability to handle high temperatures, often exceeding 100°F, while providing campus tours, assisting with outdoor set-up, and guiding new students. The ability to work in these extreme weather conditions while maintaining a positive, energetic presence is critical to successfully supporting incoming students and creating a welcoming environment during orientation activities.

Preferred Qualifications

GPA Requirements:

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher at the time of application and maintain a 2.8 GPA throughout the duration of the position.

  • You must be fully committed to the mission of Orientation and the First Year Experience program, and participate in all orientation activities.

  • You should be eager to learn about CSUSB Palm Desert Campus (PDC), including its policies, people, and programs, and be excited to share that information with new students and their families.

Compensation and Benefits:

Student Employment Hiring Range: $16.00 per hour

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.

 

Position Information:

Work status: Part-Time, Temporary, Seasonal

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm).

Summer available hours: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm).           

This is an 'On-Campus Only' position. Student Employees are not eligible to telecommute at any time.

As of January 1, 2022, the CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy prohibits the hiring of employees to perform CSU-related work outside the state of California.

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) may be required for student employment purposes. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check when required may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
