Job Summary:
Under Immediate Supervision, the Student Success Studio (S3) at the Palm Desert Campus is looking for a proactive and dedicated Student Mentor to join the team for the 2024-2025 academic year. As a Student Mentor, you will play a crucial role in supporting students both academically and personally, helping them to achieve their personal and academic goals. You will hold regular one-on-one meetings with students, serve as an embedded mentor in courses, and collaborate closely with instructors to enhance the classroom experience. Additionally, you will help connect students with campus resources, promote student engagement, and assist in facilitating workshops that foster academic success and personal growth.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Under Immediate Supervision, duties include but not limited to, One-on-One Mentoring:
- Conduct weekly or bi-weekly meetings with students to discuss academic progress, personal development, and any concerns.
- Provide guidance on time management, goal setting, work-life balance, financial literacy, and other relevant topics to help students thrive academically and personally.
- Encourage students to schedule appointments for additional support and follow-up on their goals and progress.
Classroom Support:
- Serve as an embedded mentor in University Studies (USTD) courses, working closely with the instructor to co-facilitate class activities.
- Be an accessible support system within the classroom, answering student questions, addressing concerns, and helping identify academic or personal gaps.
- Act as a first point of contact for students, providing peer-level support and offering advice on a variety of academic and personal issues.
Resource Connection:
- Help students connect with campus resources such as academic advising, counseling services, career opportunities, and tutoring services.
- Encourage students to explore campus involvement, including student organizations and extracurricular activities, to foster a well-rounded college experience.
Presentations and Workshops:
- Prepare and deliver presentations and workshops on topics that enhance students' academic and personal growth, such as time management, goal setting, financial literacy, and other life skills.
- Facilitate interactive sessions aimed at building essential skills that support student success.
Student Engagement:
- Foster a supportive and inclusive environment, ensuring students feel comfortable seeking help and receiving guidance.
- Build trust and rapport with students, actively engaging with them to create a positive and welcoming atmosphere.
- Actively encourage student participation in workshops, study sessions, and other engagement opportunities that promote academic success.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
- Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
- Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.
Required Qualifications
- Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
- Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
- International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
- Eligible to work in the United States
- Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card
Preferred Qualifications (if needed)
- Currently enrolled as a student at the Palm Desert Campus.
- Maintain a 2.5 GPA or greater per semester and cumulative.
- Eligible to work
- Interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with a diverse student body.
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a team setting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with office equipment.
- Basic Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Proactive and responsible, with a passion for helping others succeed academically and personally.
Compensation and Benefits:
Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.50 per hour.
The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.

Background Check
