Department Summary

Payroll Services is dedicated to processing accurate and timely pay warrants for our “State” faculty, staff, and student employees while adhering to university guidelines as well as federal and state regulations. We are a service-oriented department committed to assisting employees and administrative departments.

Payroll Services, under the authority of the Chancellor and under the direction of the Controller of the State of California, is responsible for the areas of payroll operations pertaining to establishing and monitoring leave accruals, maintaining the employment history database, and processing disability payments, levies, and garnishments.

Job Summary

Responsible for processing payroll and personnel transactions. Includes multiple types of pay, change in working status, various leaves of absence, and separations of CSU employees. Must apply knowledge of two data management systems and consult various resources to access, input, and maintain payroll and personal data. Validate data, identify discrepancies and errors, and calculate and reconcile variances to maintain data integrity in systems.

 

Employment Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt, Probationary with the possibility of converting to permanent.

Work Schedule

  • Typically, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required
  • Summer Schedule: Monday through Thursday from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm.

Key Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
  • Ability to understand/interpret policies, procedures, guidelines, applicable state and federal laws, educational codes and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Organize work and set priorities in order to meet critical deadlines.
  • Use Microsoft Office and Outlook software.
  • Select and apply a wide variety of moderately complex policies, procedures, programs, and applicable state and federal laws, educational codes, and collective bargaining agreements that are not clearly described in available guidelines.
  • Organize work, set priorities, and meet critical deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Perform mathematical calculations.
  • Work independently.
  • Make sound decisions and recommendations regarding payroll activities.
  • Use current computer word processing and spreadsheet software programs, web browsers, electronic calendaring programs, ERP/HRIS, and data management systems.
  • Read and write at a level appropriate to the position. 

Education and Experience

  • Education: any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Experience: equivalent to two years of payroll and personnel experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in higher education.
  • Knowledge and/or familiarity with: CSU Oracle/PeopleSoft Finance and HR systems; CSU Payroll and Collective Bargaining Units.
  • High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED).

Salary:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,700 - $4,000 per month

Classification Salary Range: $3,101 – $5,612 per month
