Job Summary:

The Native American Initiative has been established to increase the number of Native American students enrolling and graduating at CSUSB. The incumbent will perform professional Student Services work and tasks in accordance with established work procedures to contribute to the collaboration and coordination with the Office of Outreach and Student Recruitment as it relates to enrollment for special populations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead outreach and recruitment to increase enrollment for special programs and populations.
  • Represent CSUSB at educational, community, and tribal events; engage with students on and off reservations.
  • Coordinate campus experiences at San Bernardino and Palm Desert to support Native student enrollment.
  • Maintain accurate program information on CSUSB websites and stay current on majors, requirements, and student services.
  • Analyze K–12 and statewide enrollment data to identify target schools and shape recruitment strategies.
  • Build strong partnerships with faculty, staff, administrators, student groups, and community agencies.
  • Develop and pursue outreach opportunities, including events, workshops, and internships.
  • Serve as primary contact for assigned student populations throughout the enrollment process.
  • Interpret and apply program rules and regulations, ability to gather and analyze data and draw valid conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Review and analyze transcripts, test scores, GPA calculations, and unit counts to determine eligibility for admission to the University for transfer.
  • Review first-time freshman applications for all programs, including impacted majors.
  • Maintain records related to admissions, academic programs, general education, and related university information.
  • Meet with students to discuss admissions eligibility issues, provide pre-admission counseling to prospective students
  • Prepares quarterly enrollment reports detailing application, admit, and enrollment trends and prospective student inquiry analysis.
  • Other Classification-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

  • Education :Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Experience : Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of program practices, procedures, and activities, with general understanding of organizational and program management challenges.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques, and principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrated initiative and resourcefulness in planning assignments and implementing long-term program improvements.
  • Skilled in obtaining factual and interpretative information through interviews.
  • Strong logical reasoning; able to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data for written or verbal presentations.
  • Experience advising students individually and in groups on routine matters.
  • Ability to work effectively across diverse multicultural, gender, and age value systems.
  • Proven capacity to build and maintain cooperative relationships with faculty, administrators, student organizations, and external agencies.
  • Rapidly adaptable with broad knowledge of campus operations, functions, and programs.
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills with the ability to follow through on actions impacting other program or service areas.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel evenings/weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Public Administration, Native American Studies, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in outreach, recruitment, admissions, or student services.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Native American students, tribes, and community organizations.
  • Knowledge of California tribal communities, sovereignty, and educational priorities.
  • Familiarity with CSU admissions, financial aid, and student support resources.
  • Skilled in planning and leading culturally relevant outreach and retention programs.
  • Strong public speaking, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage recruitment territories and build partnerships with schools, colleges, and tribal organizations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and virtual platforms; bilingual skills (especially Indigenous languages) a plus.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,083 per month

Classification Salary Range: $5,083 - $7,228 per month

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Exempt/Probationary

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Mandated Reporter

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
